HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second day in a row Sable Burnside got the team going with the first basket of the game. Paired with a pair of Makenzie Bremer layups the Cavs went out to the 6-0 lead. They held the advantage the rest of the quarter, though the Saints would cut the lead to 12-10 via a Jessica Dowdy three-pointer. The Cavs would surge ahead again to take the 19-15 lead after one quarter.
- In the second quarter the Cavalier offense started heating up as the Cavs outscored the Saints 23-14 for the period. Madison Looney came off the bench for five quick points and some key rebounds to help UVA Wise keep Flagler at bay. They extended the lead to 40-27 with 2:40 remaining in the half via a jumper from Caroline Mullins. Flagler would hit a basket with 31 seconds left, but Burnside beat the buzzer with a short jumper to give the Cavs the 42-29 lead at the half.
- Flagler trailed Anderson at one point yesterday before rallying back to claim the 83-71 win, so that could be a possibility. Burnside hit a three to begin the third quarter scoring, and then hit another on the next Cavalier possession to put them ahead 47-29. The UVA Wise defense held Flagler scoreless for the first 3:35 of the half, and a Mullins basket put the Cavs ahead 51-29. Flagler would step up the defensive pressure late and chip into the lead to cut it to 61-47 at the end of the period.
- The fourth quarter was more of the same as the Saints would cut into the lead, only to see the Cavs extend it again. UVA Wise took the lead to 70-49 on a Burnside layup, only to see Flagler cut it to 13 with 4:20 remaining on a pair of Destiny McLendon free throws. UVA Wise went cold from the field down the stretch, going scoreless for several minutes while Flagler made a 10-0 run to cut the score to 76-71 with 1:11 left. Flagler's Marley Smith fouled Bremer, who made one free throw and missed the second, which was rebounded by Burnside. She got the ball to Burger, who was fouled, made the first and missed the second and again Burnside made the rebound and was fouled.
