ANDERSON, SC – The UVA Wise women's basketball team saw Clayton State take the one point lead with seventeen seconds remaining in the game, but a late basket by Sable Burnside and a rebound and free throw by Makenzie Bremer gave the Highland Cavaliers the 66-64 win over Clayton State Friday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Result: UVA Wise 66, Clayton State 64
Records: UVA Wise 1-0; Clayton State 0-1
Location: Anderson, SC | Alice Tribble Court at the Abney Athletic Center

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sable Burnside scored the first points of the season with a pull-up jumper just outside the paint. A couple minutes later, a Makenzie Bremer layup sparked a 10-0 run over the next 3:17 to give the Cavs the 14-4 lead. Clayton State would begin to chip away at the lead, cutting it to 18-13 after the first stanza.
- A pair of Laker baskets cut the lead to 18-17 with 8:59 left in the half, but a free throw by Katlin Burger and baskets from Burnside and Madison Looney extended the UVA Wise lead back to 23-17. Clayton State took advantage of Cavalier turnovers to take the 26-25 lead with 1:55 left in the half. Bremer then scored five straight points down the stretch and the Cavs would hold the 30-28 lead at halftime.
- The Lakers tied the game up at 31-31 off a three-pointer by Jadah Waite before a Macie Ridge layup started a 9-2 UVA Wise run to put the lead back to nine, 42-33, with 4:37 left in the third. Clayton State would cut the lead to 45-42 with less than a minute left, but a Burger free throw and a steal and layup from Ella Karst gave the Cavs the 48-42 lead heading into the final frame.
- Clayton State cut the lead to one, only to see UVA Wise hit a basket seconds later. That pattern repeated several times over the next few minutes before Kyla Greene hit a three-pointer to put CSU ahead 57-56. The lead changed a couple of times down the stretch before a Bremer free throw tied the game 61-61 with 58 second left in the game. They drew a five seconds inbound violation from the Lakers on the ensuing possession, and Burnside took advantage with a driving layup to put the Cavs up by two. Jasmyn Burts then hit a three-pointer from the corner to put CSU up 64-63 with 23 seconds left. After several timeouts, Burnside made another driving layup with 17 seconds remaining. Clayton State missed the go-ahead jumper with three seconds on the clock and Bremer rebounded it and was fouled. She hit one of the free throws and CSU were unable to get a shot off in time and the Cavs held on for the 66-64 win.
- Jada White led the Lakers with 18 points, while Jasmyn Burts added in 15. India Dowling-Green led all rebounders with twelve.
