Cavs Evade Wasp Comeback Efforts, 72-69

EMORY, VA – After seeing a double digit lead evaporate and the Emory & Henry Wasps take a four point lead, the UVA Wise men's basketball team rallied to take back the lead and hold of a late Wasp charge as they captured the 72-69 South Atlantic Conference win over Emory & Henry Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cavs opened the game with a 10-0 run, including 7 points by Bradley Dean. The Wasps would rally to cut the lead to nine before UVA Wise surged ahead to take the 28-10 lead with 8:28 left in the half. E&H then put together a 13-0 run to come back and then eventually cut the lead to 32-30 with 1:45 left in the half with a Jackson Crawford jump shot. UVW Wise would then extend to 38-32 at the half.
- The Cavs opened the second half with a small run that put the lead back at nine via a Zy'Ever Wingfield dunk with 16:35 remaining. The Wasps then scored 15 of the next 17 points to take the 51-47 lead with 11:45 left in the game. A basket by Anderson Cummins and three-pointers by  Calen Lightford and Dean gave UVA Wise the four point lead. They would extend it to 68-57 with 2:11 left only to see the Wasps mount another comeback to cut the lead to 70-69 with seven seconds left. The Cavs then worked the ball in to Dean, who was fouled and hit both free throws to seal the 72-69 victory.
- Crawford led the Wasps with 23 points, while Assad Madassalia had a team-high seven rebounds.

GETTING WISE
- Bradley Dean led the Cavs with a game-high 26 points, while Anderson Cummins had 13 and Lav Cvetkovic' scored 12.
- Evan Ramsey tied his career high with 13 rebounds and also had a career-high four blocks.
- With the win, the Cavs win their conference opener for the first time since joining the SAC in 2019.

UP NEXT
The Highland Cavaliers will return to Wise for the 2024-25 home opener this Saturday when they host Coker on the Quillen Court. The Cobras come into the game 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in SAC play after downing Wingate 133-127 in double overtime earlier tonight.
