Highland Cavaliers Host Trojans in Homecoming Clash Saturday Afternoon

WISE – The UVA Wise football team will celebrate their annual Homecoming this Saturday by starting the day honoring the past and then will face the present as they host Anderson University Saturday afternoon on the Beaty-Richmond Field at Carl Smith Stadium.

Wasem and Barbour HOF 2024This year's Homecoming theme is "Celebrate Your Cavalier Era", and the day will start as the college honors the football team (Bruce's Era) as they induct both former head coach Bruce Wasem and former all-conference wide receiver Matt Barbour, who played under Wasem, at 9 a.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. They will also be recognized before the football game at 2 p.m.

ABOUT UVA WISE (GARY'S ERA)
- The Highland Cavaliers will enter the game with a 2-2 overall and 1-1 record. They are currently tied for third in the South Atlantic Conference Mountain Division.
- This will be the first meeting between the two teams. Anderson is in their first season of football.
- The Cavs enter the game with 1,023 total yards of offense on the season, compared to 1,747 by their opponents.
- Jake Corkren is 76-125 for 672 yards and five touchdowns on the season. Coming into the game between Corkren and Cooper Wick the team's passing is 78-128, compared to their opponents who are also 78-128.
- Dejauvis Dozier has 45 carries on the season to lead the Cavs, while Ian Scammell has 32. Scammell and DJ Powell account for all the rushing touchdowns this season.
- Three Cavalier receivers have more than 150 yards receiving for the season. Seth Fischbach has 21 for 231 yards, while Dorien Goddard has 18 for 168 and Powell 15 for 151 yards. Fischbach leads the receiving corps with two touchdowns.
- Powell leads the team in kick returns with 199 yards on seven returns.
- Brub Hines III (24), Jalen Pickens (23), Nasir Spruill (20), and AJ Stewart (19) lead the team in tackles. Kenneth Long has four tackles for a loss of 15 yards, while Emmanuel Scott had 3.5 tackles for loss, also for 15 yards.
- Scott also leads the team with two sacks for a total loss of 13 yards.

ABOUT THE TROJANS
- This is the official first year of football for Anderson. They have methodically built a program since first announcing the team July, 2021. Last season was what AU calls a "Redshirt Year" for the team as they tuned up for this season.
- They opened the season with a pair of blowout wins over St. Andrew's (51-14) and LaGrange (44-14) before opening SAC play against Limestone. They have since lost all three of their SAC games to Limestone (52-5), Barton (27-13), and this past Sunday against Catawba 44-41 in overtime.
- The Trojans have 1,848 yards of total offense, while their opponents have 1,826. Their opponents are out-rushing the Trojans 4.9 yards per carry to 3.9 yards per carry. AU narrowly leads in passing as they average 223.8 yards per catch and their opposition has 210.2 yards per catch.
- Tyler Wesley has been the main quarterback for AU as he is 60-102 for 955 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions on the year. Riley Willis has thrown for 22-38 for 156 yards in four games.
- Monzelle Campbell has 62 carries for 248 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Trojans. JB Seay has 27 carries for 182 yards, while Wesley has carried the ball 25 times for 78 yards and a touchdown.
- Jalon Warthen-Carr has 26 catches for 362 yards and three touchdowns, while Kenneth Brown has 14 for 187 yards and a touchdown. Wesley Beckett has 12 catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns as well.
- Four Trojans have 20 or more tackles on the season, led by Jerrod Woods' 38, four tackles for loss, and a sack. Josiah Jeffery has 32 tackles, while Caleb Gleason and Cade Eavenson have 20 tackles apiece.

UP NEXT
UVA Wise will make the relatively short trip to Carson-Newman to face the Eagles on October 19. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. from Burke-Tarr Stadium. C-N is currently scheduled to play at Mars Hill this Saturday at 1 p.m.
