WISE – UVA Wise made several runs, but in the end Wingate held off the Highland Cavaliers for the 3-0 South Atlantic Conference match Friday evening on the Quillen Court.
It was a big evening for junior setter
Piper Suddeth, who passed the 1000 assists mark for her career. She becomes the ninth Highland Cavalier to surpass the millennial milestone and the fifth in the program's NCAA era (2013-present).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs grabbed the quick lead and slowly extended it out to 17-8. They went on to take the set by a 25-13 score.
- Wingate once again grabbed a quick 3-0 lead and stayed around that margin until a pair of kills by
Morgan Blevins and an
Abigail Curtis ace cut the Bulldog lead to 9-8. Over the next several rallies Wingate would extend their lead and the Cavs would cut it back to one. A pair of Wingate runs pushed the lead out to six points and they held on for the 25-17 win.
- In the third set the Cavs led early and took a 4-2 lead before Wingate put together a 5-1 run. They extended the lead to as much as seven before UVA Wise cut it to 24-20. Emily Johnson then ended the match with she took the set from Maya Van Heyst and killed it, giving Wingate the 25-20 win.
GETTING WISE
Cassie Farley congratulates Suddeth on her 1,000th assist
- Suddeth reached the 1,000 point assist mark in the first set as she passed the ball to
Cassidy Farley, who then picked up her 420th career kill to cut the Wingate lead to 18-10. She finished the match with a team-high 14 assists, putting her at 1,008 for her career to date. She also had seven digs.
Lily Gutierrez chipped in 12 assists.

Riley Brandon led the team with eight kills, and
Serina Petersen had six.
- Curtis had a team-high 12 digs, and
Kaylee Scarce chipped in nine digs in addition to her five kills.
ABOUT WINGATE
- Sydney Moreland had 12 kills, while Lorna Stacherski and Emily Johnson had nine apiece.
- Van Herst had a match-high 25 assists, and Kate Jamerson had a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs. Elsa Lamphere dug the ball 10 times as well, while Maddie Hoffman led the team with 17.
- The Bulldogs out-hit UVA Wise .319-.123 for the match.

UVA Wise will have a bit of a rest and prepare for Carson-Newman, who comes to the Prior Center Tuesday evening. The Eagles are currently tied for second in the SAC with a 14-6 overall and a 10-2 conference record after sweeping Lenoir-Rhyne 3-0 earlier tonight in Holt Fieldhouse. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
