UVA Wise Returns Home For Saturday Showdown with Mars Hill

WISE – The UVA Wise football team returns home for their last two home games of the season before closing out the 2024 campaign with two games on the road.

First up is a meeting with Mars Hill University Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on the Beaty-Richmond Field.

ABOUT UVA WISE
- The Cavs are now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in South Atlantic Conference play following their 35-23 loss at then-18th ranked Carson-Newman last Saturday,
- The Lions lead the all-time series 10-1. The lone win came at Mars Hill on April 2, 2021, when three different quarterbacks combined for six touchdown passes as UVA Wise won 40-28. That game wrapped up the special 2021 spring season for the Cavs, who were unable to play in the fall of 2020 for obvious reasons.
- The Cavs enter the game with 1,775 total yards of offense on the season (295.8 yards a game), compared to 2,538 (423.0 ypg) by their opponents.
- Jake Corkren is 124-204 for 1154 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. He also has 87 yards rushing and a touchdown to his credit.
- Dejauvis Dozier has 62 carries on the season to lead the Cavs, while Ian Scammel has 56.

- Brub Hines III leads the team with 38 total tackles (23 solo). He also has 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception. Jalen Pickens also has 1.5 tackles for loss to go along with 34 tackles (18 solo). Other players with 25 or more tackles are AJ Stewart (29), Matthew Strong (26), and Emmanuel Scott (26).
- Scott and Kenneth Long have two sacks apiece to lead the team. Spruill, Jimmie Simmons and Raaphell Mayes II all have a sack each.

ABOUT MARS HILL
- The Lions enter the game with a 2-3 record (2-2 in SAC play) in a season where the schedule has not been in their favor to date. First, they played on August 29 in a game they lost to 14th-ranked Delta State. Then they were off for three weeks and two days before their next game, an eight-point loss to Lenoir-Rhyne on Sept. 21. They then had their next game cancelled because of the damage from Helene, which left the campus closed for days. They returned to action with a win over Newberry before giving up 14 points in the final 96 seconds to 23rd-ranked Carson-Newman. Last week they defeated Tusculum 30-3 to pick up their second win of the season.
- JR Martin is the leading quarterback for MHU. He has thrown 80-139-2 for 999 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Demetrius Boney is the other QB and is 2-7 for 35 yards in limited action.
- Martin is also the leading rusher for the Lions as he has 71 carries for 217 yards and seven touchdowns. Not far behind is Jon Gullette, who has 209 yards and a touchdown from 55 carries. Kyeandre Magloire is the only other rusher with over 100 yards as he has 102 yards from 22 carries.
- Malik Laurent is the top passing target for the team as he has 19 catches for 314 yards and four touchdowns. Beau DeBerry (173 yards) and Gullette (188 yards) each have 18 catches apiece. Izaiah Jean-Baptiste has two touchdowns and 134 yards from eight receptions.
- Dexter Fitzpatrick and Steven Reid lead the defense in tackles – Fitzpatrick with 52 and a sack and Reid with 40. Kobe Haynes has 19 tackles with three sacks for a total of 32 yards in addition to a sixteen-yard interception.
- MHU has 1,611 yards of total offense, compared to 1,535 for their opponents. They are out-rushing the opposition by 577-533 and out-passing them 1,034 – 1.002.
