BURNSIDE'S CAREER NIGHT PROPELS CAVS BY LIONS

WISE - - Sable Burnside netted a career-high 17 points while teammate Caitlyn Ross recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 assists as UVA Wise took down Mars Hill 87-83 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action inside the Prior Center Wednesday.

UVA Wise (6-6, 2-3 SAC) enjoyed its strongest outside shooting performance of the season as Jamie Cluesman's crew made 14-of-24 long-range shots. The 14 made triples were a season-high as was the 58.3 percent shooting performance from distance.

The long-range shooting performance allowed the Cavs to take a lead to the locker room. Mars Hill (6-7, 1-3 SAC) went to the foul line 15 times in the opening 20 minutes converting 11 as the visitors trailed 50-25 at the break.

Burnside scored 14 of her career-best 17 points in the first half as the junior finished the game with a career-best two made 3-pointers as part of a 6-for-12 shooting performance from the field.

The Lions would outpace the Cavs in the third quarter as the guests held the hosts to 6-of-19 shooting from the floor in the third period. The strong defensive effort allowed Mars Hill to go to the fourth quarter with a 65-64 lead.

UVA Wise scored the first points of the fourth quarter on an Allyson Fleenor bucket off a Ross assist. It would be a lead the Cavs would not relinquish.

The lead would grow to eight with 1:55 to play on one of Sarah Burton's four made 3-pointers. It was part of a 16-point effort for the freshman who scored in double figures for the eighth time this season.

The Lions would claw back in the contest with a quick 5-0 scoring spurt to make it 81-78 with 73 seconds to play.

UVA Wise would seal the game at the charity stripe by going 6-for-6 at the line over the final minute as Burnside and Ross went perfect down the stretch.

On the night the Cavs went 13-for-17 at the line while the Lions went 15-for-24 at the stripe.

Mars Hill's Jo Snow tied Ross for game-high scoring honors with 24 points thanks to five made 3-pointers. As a team, the Lions made 10 triples, three of which came from Maddie Gillie who netted 18 points. Aaliyah El was a third Mars Hill player who recorded double figures with 16 points as she made 5-of-6 field goal attempts off the bench.

With 24 points, Ross moved to eighth in school history in scoring; the fifth-year now has 1,473 career points.

The win helped UVA Wise move into a four-way tie for sixth place in the league. The top eight teams in the league will qualify for the conference tournament in March.

Next up, the Cavs head to the Tarheel State Saturday. Tip-off from Lenoir-Rhyne is slated for 2 p.m. and the game can be heard live on FM 92.5 WLSD.
