JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - Lindsey Taylor scored a game-high 32 points on 11-of-12 shooting to lead Carson-Newman to a 91-66 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over UVA Wise inside Holt Fieldhouse Thursday. It was the Eagles' fourth victory over their last five games and improved the program to 12-0 all-time against the Cavaliers.
CN (11-5, 5-3 SAC) took control of the game from the onset. Mike Mincey's squad scored the first 12 points of the afternoon and never looked back.
UVA Wise (7-10, 3-6 SAC) did battle back to get the game within single digits twice in the first quarter but, each time the hosts immediately countered with a scoring spurt. Following a pair of foul shots by the Cavs' Caitlyn Ross that cut the deficit to 16-8, the Eagles scored the next seven points, four of which came from Taylor.
Taylor scored 12 of her 32 points in the opening quarter which allowed her to surpass 1,000 career points in a CN uniform, becoming the 30th player in program history.
The second quarter saw the visitors once again battle back to reduce the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions. The final time came on a free throw by Jalie Ruehling that made the score 43-34 with 2:44 to play in the half.
Again, the momentum was short-lived as CN closed the half on a 9-to-2 spurt to take a 52-36 advatnage to intermission.
The run effectively ended the contest as the Eagles pushed the lead to as many as 31 points in the third quarter as the hosts won the third period 25-to-16.
The final quarter saw some fresh faces for both schools. For UVA Wise, Hailey Williams and Alicea Farmer scored their first collegiate points.
A total of 10 Eagles scored, Braelyn Wykle netted 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including a 4-for-9 showing from distance. Tori Rutherford also cracked double figures in the win as she tossed in 13 points behind a 3-for-6 showing from the 3-point line.
Ross was the only UVA Wise player to finish in double figures as she finished with 13 points. The fifth-year guard also handed out five assists, giving her 754 for her career. She is just the third player in SAC history to reach 750 career assists.
The Cavs will be back in action Saturday in Hartsville, S.C. Tip from Coker is scheduled for 2 p.m.
