COKER SURVIVES UVA WISE

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - - Kristynn Knight scored a game-high 21 points while teammate Kamari Thompson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as Coker upended UVA Wise 75-68 in South Atlantic Conference action inside the DeLoach Center Saturday.

Coker (11-6, 4-4 SAC) took a 9-6 lead on a 3-point bucket by Knight with 6:32 to play in the opening quarter. UVA Wise (7-11, 3-7 SAC) would not be able to take the lead again.

The Cobras would push the lead to 10 on back-to-back baskets by Thompson at the 3:58 mark of the opening quarter before the Cavaliers began battling back.

Leah Kestner, Katlin Burger and Caitlyn Ross would each make a field goal as part of a quick 6-0 run to get the lead trimmed to four at 16-12 with 1:43 to play in the opening quarter.

Coker would again seemingly be on the cusp of putting the game out of reach in the third quarter when the hosts put together a 7-to-2 spurt that made it a 47-37 affair with 6:12 left in the stanza.

Once more, Jamie Cluesman's team fought back. This time with nine consecutive points that culminated in a Kestner jumper off an offensive rebound.

Sarah Burton would get the game tied at 51 all moments later when she stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a deuce.

It would be the last tie of the afternoon. The Cobras scored the final three points of the third quarter and opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer from Dominique Rodriguez. Coker would once more seemingly be on the verge of putting the game away when Thompson capped a 7-to-1 scoring run with a basket off a Knight assist. The bucket made it 66-56 with 5:58 to play.

UVA Wise put up one final push as Burton drilled a triple, Ross sank a pair of charity shots and Burger made a jumper to cut the lead to 66-63 with under four minutes to play.

The Cavs would get a stop on the next Cobras' possession but would be unable to capitalize on the offensive end.

From that point, Coker would score the next five points to push the lead to 71-63 with 2:40 to play.

UVA Wise would trail by multiple possessions for the remainder of the contest as Coker sank enough free throws to seal the victory.

Sable Burnside fired in 18 points to lead UVA Wise in the loss while freshman Makenzie Bremer netted a season-high 13 points with Burger (11), Burton (10) and Ross (10) also tallying double figures for the Cavs.

UVA Wise will now have a week off before returning to action next Saturday at home against nationally ranked Catawba inside the Prior Center. Tip time is slated for 2 p.m.
