HICKORY, N.C. - - No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne accumulated 567 yards of offense, 199 coming from tailback Dwane McGee, as the Bears posted a 56-3 South Atlantic Conference victory over UVA Wise at Moretz Stadium Saturday.
Lenoir-Rhyne (5-0, 3-0 SAC) controlled the game from start-to-finish. The Bears scored touchdowns on each of their first four drives to take a commanding 28-0 lead in the second quarter.
The fast start was part of a 42-point opening half for the hosts who saw McGee cross the goal line twice in the half with Zavion Turner-Knox also adding a pair of touchdown runs for LR.
UVA Wise (1-4, 0-3 SAC) scored its only points of the game thanks to the leg of Kellan Dalton. The kicker booted a 49-yard field goal, the second longest in school history, at the 5:27 mark of the third quarter At the time, it made the score 49-3.
The Cavaliers were limited to 27 rushing yards on 36 attempts as part of a day that saw the offense tally 203 yards of offense.
DJ Powell had a big day at wide receiver in defeat. Powell finished with seven catches for 82 yards. Patrick Taylor led the UVA Wise defense with seven solo stops.
Jake Corkren and Juwan Dent combined to complete 19-of-33 pass attempts for 176 yards in the loss.
LR saw quarterback Jalen Ferguson complete 13-of-18 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns; the signal caller also ran for 32 yards. Ferguson's favorite target was DeAree Rogers who grabbed six passes for 109 yards, Dominique Marshall and Malekei Summer had touchdown catches for the Bears.
Linebacker Jon Ross Maye paced the LR defense with 10 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Overall, the Bears' defense posted eight tackles for loss, including three sacks.
Both schools begin SAC divisional play next Saturday. LR travels to Limestone while UVA Wise entertains Emory & Henry for Homecoming 2023. Kickoff from Smith Stadium is slated for 2 p.m.
