JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - Host Carson-Newman used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead before the Eagles plated five runs in the sixth inning to claim a 9-5 South Atlantic Conference baseball victory over UVA Wise at the Silver Diamond Complex Friday.
The loss stopped what was a five-game winning streak for the Cavaliers (9-13, 1-3 SAC). Brandon Costa's team had a 1-0 lead after four innings of play thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Jeb Hurst.
Carson-Newman (10-11, 3-1) would have a plethora of base runners in the game, stranding six over the game's first two innings and the Eagles finally made use of their traffic on the bases in the fifth.
James Denton tied the game when he homered to start the big scoring inning before Aiden Gibson knocked in a pair with a double to put the hosts on top 3-1. William Gibbs put the finishing touches on the frame when his double allowed Gibson to come home with the fourth run.
UVA Wise would fight back in its half of the sixth inning. A two-out double by Hunter Meador would get D'Sean Prinkleton to the plate and the redshirt sophomore would deliver with a two-run blast over the left-centerfield wall to get the Cavs within a run at 4-3. The homer was Prinkleton's fourth of the year and his first against a league foe.
The momentum was short-lived for the guests as CN would take advantage of a pair of UVA Wise errors , three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch to score five times and effectively put the game out of reach.
Cole Harness had a two-run double for the Cavs in the ninth but the team would be unable to get any closer en route to dropping the series opener.
DJ Dickson would go hitless in the game for UVA Wise, it snapped what was an 11-game hitting streak for the sophomore. Meanwhile, Meador pushed his streak of reaching base safely to 16 games; the second baseman went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the loss.
Jacob Boyle, Prinkleton and Hurst joined Meador as Cavs with two hits in the game. Overall, UVA Wise lined 10 hits in the contest.
Gibbs finished with two hits and a stolen base to lead CN, the Eagles were outhit 10-to-7 in the game but took advantage of nine walks and five hit batters to produce offense.
Noah Pridemore earned the mound win by tossing 5 2/3 innings. Pridemore fanned five, walked one and allowed seven hits in his outing. The hurler surrendered three runs over his 86-pitch performance.
The same two teams will be back at it Saturday when the series concludes with a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m.
