WATT HITS THE SHOT, CAVS WIN IN OT OVER RAILSPLITTERS

HARROGATE, TENN. — UVA Wise's Anna Claire Watt called game with a shot at the 1:52 mark of overtime to finalize a 16-15 win over Lincoln Memorial in the team's conference opener on Wednesday, March 1.

UVA Wise (3-2, 1-0 SAC) catapulted to a 2-0 advantage after Grace Golatt pushed in a goal and Abby Stoffelen took a successful free position shot at the 11:46 mark of the first quarter. Within the next minute, Lincoln Memorial (2-4, 0-1 SAC) quickly eradicated the deficit with back-to-back goals from Ali Van Der Ziel and Jaedyn Ryba to even the score at two.

The Railsplitters kept their scoring run going, securing two more quick goals to jump ahead 4-2 before Stoffelen snagged her second goal of the day for the Cavs to get within one before the first period ended.

Despite a tight second quarter with five scored goals from the 'Splitters and four from UVA Wise, Lincoln Memorial started to pull away in the third. Their squad outscored the Cavs 5-2 in the period, taking a 14-9 lead with a quarter to go in regulation.

The Cavs found a spark in the fourth, holding Lincoln Memorial to one singular goal while the efforts of Stoffelen, Watt, Caitlyn Schultz, Issie Brown, and Katie Allen joined in on Cavalier scoring to tie the barn-burner at 15 and force overtime.

In overtime, Watt put up the ultimate game-winning shot at the 1:52 mark to take the team's first league win of the year.

Stoffelen led the Cavs with four goals while Watt added three of her own. Schultz, Golatt, and Brown put up two goals each, and Ashley Fisher, Logen Davis, and Allen each swiped in a goal. Schultz also added a game-high three groundballs.

"At the end of the day, the game isn't over until it's over," Head Coach Meghan Dennehy said. "We never gave up and fought hard in the forth quarter to overcome a six- goal deficit to force OT. When we won the draw in OT I had a good feeling we would win, and that we did!"

Up next, the Cavaliers face SAC opponent Limestone in Wise on Saturday, March 4 with a 1 PM start.
