CAVS SUFFER ONE-RUN SETBACK AT OHIO DOMINICAN

MASON, Ohio - - UVA Wise may feel snake bitten in the early part of the season. The Cavaliers dropped their fourth one-run game of the season Sunday in a 3-2 setback at Ohio Dominican. With the win, the Panthers win the series two games to one after the schools split a doubleheader Saturday.

UVA Wise (1-10) struck first when DJ Dickson worked a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning. The inning would prove to be costly for the Cavaliers as Ohio Dominican (2-1) starter Max Whitesell would strikeout back-to-back hitters to end the threat.

The strikeouts seemed to invigorate Whitesell who was making his first collegiate start. The right-hander finished with five punchouts over six innings of work while allowing three hits and two runs.

Cavalier starter Clayton Lanser was equally impressive on the mound as he scattered four hits and allowed a single run over four innings of work.

The run Lanser did allow enabled the Panthers to tie the game. Jake Scherette's RBI double in the home fifth knocked Lanser out of the game but, like UVA Wise, Ohio Dominican was unable to do further damage.

Reliever Ryan Whitson retired the next three Panthers to send the game to the sixth even at 1-1.

Gavin Birkhimer would put the visitors back on top in the seventh with an RBI groundout that allowed Jeb Hurst to scamper home.

The lead was short-lived as an inning later Jesse Kramer tied the game with a run-scoring single to plate Jack Mathey.

UVA Wise would see a scoring opportunity go by the wayside in the ninth inning as Hurst and Jacob Boyle lined consecutive singles to start the frame.

Left-handed reliever Myles Martinez would then retire three consecutive Cavs to give his team a shot at a walk-off victory.

David Silva walked to lead off the home ninth and moved up 90 feet on a successful bunt before Mathey popped out and Michael Knapp walked to put two on with two out for Alex Brill.

Brill would deliver with a game-winning single to left field allowing Silva to come home with the winning run.

Hurst had two of UVA Wise's seven hits with Mathey pacing Ohio Dominican with three hits.

The Cavs are back on the road Tuesday at Carolina University. The doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m.
