BRISTOL, Tenn. - - A four-run second inning proved to be the difference as King University's baseball team continued its best start to a season since 2008 with a 6-4 triumph over UVA Wise at the King Baseball Field Wednesday. The win was the sixth straight to start the season for the Tornado who have yet to play a road game.
King (6-0) used an RBI triple from Truman Roper while taking advantage of a walk, an error and a wild pitch to go on top 4-0 after two innings of action.
A half inning later, UVA Wise (0-8) cut the deficit to two as Gavin Birkhimer had a run-producing single before later scoring on a Tornado error.
The momentum was short-lived as the hosts plated two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of Cavalier errors.
Leading 6-3, the score would remain unchanged until the top of the ninth when Carter Babb knocked in Hunter Meador to make it a two-run contest.
It would be as close as UVA Wise would get as Ray Berry recorded the final out of the game to post the save.
Mitchell Kahlenberg earned the mound win with a scoreless inning of work to improve to 1-0 on the season.
The Cavs will return to action this weekend at Ohio Dominican. The three-game series starts with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
