CAVS FALL AS ROSS BREAKS ASSIST RECORD

WISE - - On a night when UVA Wise senior Caitlyn Ross established a new single-season program record with her 173rd assist, visiting Mars Hill made some history of its own. The Lions scored their first league win of the year and snapped a 49-game road losing streak in the South Atlantic Conference with a 66-57 triumph inside the Prior Center Wednesday.

Mars Hill (5-14, 1-10 SAC) opened the game with an 11-to-3 scoring spurt behind the play of guard Jo Snow. Snow scored five of her team's 11 points in the spurt to kick start a 24-point, five-rebound, three-assist, two-steal outing.

UVA Wise (13-10, 4-8 SAC) would tie the game at the 4:20 mark of the second quarter when Sable Burnside capped an 8-0 Cavalier scoring rally. The bucket was part of a big night for the forward who tossed in a career-high 14 points while adding nine rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes of action.

Naja Ngongba would give the Lions back the lead when she made one of her two 3-pointers in the contest only to see Nia Vanzant tie the game at 20 all with a traditional 3-pont play with 3:10 to play in the half.

The rest of the half would feature little offense but, a long-range bucket by Josie Hester in the final minute of the half sent UVA Wise to the locker room in front 23-22.

The Cavs started the second half strong and established their biggest lead of the game when Hester scored a fast break bucket at the 9:23 mark of the third quarter to put the hosts on top 28-22.

Mars Hill countered with a 16-to-4 run of its own to put the visitors in front 42-36 with 2:14 to play in the third quarter.

The Lions would push the advantage to eight at 52-44 with 6:27 to play when Janette Hanni connected on a 3-pointer.

UVA Wise would not go down without a fight, the Cavs would score the next nine points in the game to regain the lead at 53-52 with 3:31 remaining.

Ngongba would tie the game by making 1-of-3 free throws before Ross broke the single-season assist record on a pass to Katlin Burger to give UVA Wise the lead back with under three minutes to play.

Jamie Cluesman's team would take a four-point lead moments later when Burger dished to Ross for a basket with 2:21 left.

It would be the last points of the game for UVA Wise as Mars Hill closed the game on a 13-0 run to collect its first-ever victory in the series.

The Lions finished with nine made triples while making 15-of-21 foul shots. By contrast, the Cavs were 3-of-23 from distance while making all six of their free throw attempts.

Hanni netted 17 points with Ngongba adding 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Ross posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists with Vanzant scoring a team-high 17 points to join Burnside in double-figure scoring.

Kaitlin Bailey led UVA Wise in rebounding with 10 as her team won the battle of the boards 49-to-45.

Next up, the Cavs travel to South Carolina Saturday. Tip-off from Newberry is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the action can be heard live on FM 92.5 (wlsdradio.com).
