NEWBERRY, S.C. - - Newberry outscored UVA Wise 21-to-5 in the third quarter of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference women's basketball game en route to a 77-63 win inside Eleazer Arena. The win snapped what was a four-game losing skid for the Wolves who improved to 3-0 all-time at home against the Cavaliers.
Newberry (7-15, 3-9 SAC) entered the third quarter trailing 39-38 but, by the time the third quarter horn sounded the hosts had built a 59-44 advantage.
UVA Wise (13-11, 4-9 SAC) was held to a single-made field goal in the third quarter as the Cavaliers turned the ball over nine times in the period.
The Wolves took the turnovers and created high-quality shots as Joanna Tincher's squad connected on 9-of-12 made field goals in the quarter.
The Cavs would get the game back within single digits twice in the fourth quarter. The first occurred with 5:21 to play when Sable Burnside completed a traditional 3-point play before a Josie Hester foul shot made it a 70-61 game with 3:18 to play.
It would be as close as Jamie Cluesman's team would get as Newberry closed the game on a 7-to-2 scoring run to seal the victory.
UVA Wise built the one-point lead at intermission behind the play of Nia Vanzant. Vanzant scored 15 of her team-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes as the Cavs made 14 of their first 30 field goal attempts.
Caitlyn Ross was the only other UVA Wise player in double-figure scoring. The senior netted 14 points while handing out four assists in what was her 100th career start in her 100th career collegiate game.
Anna Whited earned her first collegiate start in the contest and the former Eastside High School standout tallied nine points on 3-of-3 shooting in 19 minutes of play.
Ericka Wiseley led all players with 17 points with April Rummery-Lamb adding 15, Holly Davies tallying 12 and Payton Cronen chipping in 10 for the winners.
Newberry won the battle of the boards 36-to-25. Rummery-Lamb led all players with 10 rebounds as part of her double-double performance.
For the game, the Wolves shot 54.9 percent from the floor while earning 29 foul shots. It was the second most free throws Newberry has shot this season.
