ROSS' TRIPLE-DOUBLE PROPELS CAVS TO SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN

WISE - - UVA Wise fifth-year Caitlyn Ross recorded the third triple-double of her career with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists to lead her team to a 73-57 South Atlantic Conference victory over Newberry at the Prior Center Saturday afternoon. It was the third triple-double of the Kingston, Tenn. native's career, the most of any active player in NCAA Division II women's basketball.

Newberry (2-6, 0-2 SAC) led by as many as 11 points with 7:18 to play in the first half before UVA Wise (4-4, 1-2 SAC) battled back over the remainder of the quarter.

Jamie Cluesman's team posted a 13-to-2 scoring run to turn a 24-13 deficit to a tie game. The run featured nine of freshman Sarah Burton's game-high 21 points. The guard capped the run with a 3-pointer off a Sable Burnise assist.

Moments later, Burnside would give the Cavaliers a lead at 29-28 when she picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast for a deuce. The Wolves' April Rummery-Lamb scored inside with less than 20 seconds to play in the half to help the guests to a 30-29 advantage at intermission.

The third quarter saw Newberry take a 43-40 lead with 2:19 to play in the period on a jumper from Jenna Yanity. Burton quickly got the game tied with a 3-pointer before sophomore Allyson Fleenor netted the first 3-pointer of her career to give the hosts a 46-43 lead with 1:21 to play in the stanza.

Fleenor's triple would give UVA Wise a lead it would not relinquish as the team would put together a 22-to-9 scoring run that culminated in a Katlin Burger layup off a Ross assist that made it a 64-54 game with four minutes to play.

The run put the game out of reach, leaving Ross' triple-double pursuit the only matter left to decide down the stretch.

The guard completed the triple-double with an assist to Burger with 1:58 to play; Burger's bucket made it a 70-57 game with 1:58 to play.

Ross would make 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the 73-57 triumph, giving the team its first league triumph of the season.

UVA Wise shot a season-high 50.9 percent from the floor as the Cavs assisted on 26-of-29 made field goals. Burger (17) joined Burton and Ross in double-figure scoring marking the fifth straight game she scored in double figures. The 15-point outing by Ross gives her 1,382 for her career, moving her past current Cav assistant coach Kalee Johnson for 11th in scoring at the college.

Burton (4) and Ross (3) combined to make seven of the team's eight long-range shots. The eight made 3-pointers are the second most makes by the team this winter.

Rummery-Lamb (12), Deshona Gaither (12) and Jess Tomkins (10) scored in double figures for the Wolves who fell to 0-4 all-time in Wise.
