EMORY, Va. - - Host Emory & Henry College outscored UVA Wise 30-to-10 in the fourth quarter to claim its first win over the Cavaliers since 1984 with a 76-72 win inside the King Center Wednesday.
Emory & Henry (5-5, 1-3 SAC) trailed 64-48 with nine minutes to go before finishing the game on a 28-to-8 scoring run to claim the come from behind triumph.
UVA Wise (4-5, 1-3 SAC) went nearly seven minutes without scoring a point in the fourth quarter as the hosts mounted the comeback. The run was highlighted by three consecutive made 3-pointers from the Wasps. Hannah Spainhour's triple cut the Cavalier lead to 68-65 with 3:42 remaining before Grace Glance's 3-pointer tied the game with 3:07 left.
E&H took the lead for good on Rhyan Harris' long-range bucket with 2:19 to play making it a 71-68 affair.
Allyson Fleenor would get UVA Wise within one and after E&H split a pair of free throws, the visitors had the ball down two with a chance to tie or take the lead.
The Cavs would miss a 3-pointer but, UVA Wise would get an offensive rebound. The second chance opportunity would go for naught as the Wasps forced a turnover.
From there, Jamie Cluesman's team would be forced to foul. The Wasps would make four consecutive foul shots down the stretch to secure the win.
Caitlyn Ross scored 24 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out six assists while Sarah Burton tossed in 21 points as each woman played all 40 minutes in defeat.
Hall tallied 17 points and nine boards with Spainhour (15), Harris (14) and Glance (12) also posting double-figure scoring in the win.
Next up, UVA Wise will entertain Barton College Monday at 2 p.m. inside the Prior Center.
