STIFLING FOURTH QUARTER DEFENSE PROPELS CAVS

WISE - - UVA Wise limited visiting Barton College to one made field goal in the fourth quarter as Jamie Cluesman's team rallied from an eight-point deficit to score a 78-73 non-conference women's basketball win at the Prior Center Monday.

Trailing 64-56 to start the fourth quarter, UVA Wise (5-5) clamped down defensively. Barton (1-9) made just 1-of-10 field goal attempts in the 10-minute stanza as the Bulldogs were limited to nine points in the quarter.

Neither team fared well offensively at the start of the fourth quarter. UVA Wise's Sarah Burton made the first field goal of the period, a 3-pointer, with 4:33 to play to trim Barton's lead to 65-62.

The Bulldogs had eight of their 18 turnovers in the quarter as the hosts were able to inch closer at the free-throw line. The Cavs finished 17-for-21 at the charity stripe, including a 7-for-8 showing in the final period.

Burton would eventually give UVA Wise a lead it would not relinquish when the freshman scored to put her squad up 68-67 with 2:44 left.

The guard's shot was the start of a game-deciding 8-0 run for the hosts as Ines Latapia scored all four of her points in the stretch.

Barton's Lauren Walker would make her team's only field goal of the quarter, a 3-pointer, with 18 seconds to play to cut the deficit to 74-70.

From there, Cavs' fifth-year guard Caitlyn Ross would salt the game away by going 4-for-4 at the foul line giving her team its fourth win in its last five contests.

It was part of another big night for Ross who became just the third player in South Atlantic Conference history to reach 700 career assists. The guard finished the game with six assists to reach 705 for her career while adding a team-high 24 points and six rebounds.

UVA Wise held a 41-35 lead at intermission behind the play of Ross and Katlin Burger. Ross scored 12 of her 24 points in the opening 20 minutes while Burger scored all 11 of her points as the Cavs shot 44.1 percent from the floor.

Barton went to the fourth quarter on top 64-56 behind a 26-to-8 spurt to close the third period.

Two  other UVA Wise players reached double figures in Sable Burnside (11) and Burton (10).

The Cavs dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 45-to-25. The strong rebounding night allowed UVA Wise to score 17 second-chance points compared to two for Barton.

Walker had a big game in defeat as she tossed in a game-high 32 points behind seven made triples. As a team, the Bulldogs connected on 11-of-21 long-range attempts but the team was undone by the poor fourth-quarter shooting.

Barton's poor fourth-quarter shooting was in stark opposition to how the guests shot for the remainder of the game. Wendee Saintsing's squad entered the final period 24-for-49 from the field which included a 10-for-14 showing in a 29-point third quarter.

Lauren Mingo (12) and Cierra Revelle (10) also reached double figures for the Bulldogs who fell to 0-3 against SAC schools this season.

Monday's game was the last for UVA Wise before the holiday break. The team will be back in action on Dec. 30 at former Mountain East Conference rival University of Charleston (W.Va.). Tip-time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
