THE NOTES TO KNOW
• UVA Wise was picked ninth in the Preseason SAC Coaches' Poll. The Cavaliers return a quartet of starters in fifth year players Caitlyn Ross and Leah Kestner along with juniors Katlin Burger and Kaitlin Bailey.
• Head coach Jamie Cluesman has guided UVA Wise to winning seasons in two of the last three seasons.
• Caitlyn Ross became UVA Wise's all-time assist leader last season (639) and enters this winter 171 assists shy of tying career SAC assist record (810) currently held by Wingate's Cynthia Thomas.
• Ross earned Preseason Second-Team All-SAC accolades after leading the league and NCAA Division II in assists per game (7.6) last season.
• UVA Wise is 1-5 in season openers over the last six seasons. The lone win came last year, 72-65 (OT) over Clayton State.
• Led by Kaitlin Bailey's 58 blocks, the Cavs led the SAC and ranked third in NCAA Division II in blocks per game with 5.4
• Under Cluesman, UVA Wise has been one of the better shooting teams in the SAC. A year ago, the Cavs ranked second in the conference shooting 43.1 percent. It marked the fourth consecutive season the team had shot over 40 percent from the floor.
• Burger netted 10 or more points 20 times as a sophomore. The junior is the team's top returning scorer from a year ago at 12.4 points per game.
• Last winter, UVA Wise grabbed 1,141 rebounds. Ironically, the team's opponents also grabbed 1,141 rebounds.
• With a win over Clayton State, UVA Wise would win its season opener in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008 and 2009.
