BRISTOL, Tenn. - - Junior Katlin Burger scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead UVA Wise by King University 73-52 in non-conference basketball play Wednesday. It marked the second consecutive year the Cavaliers defeated the Tornado and halted a three-game losing skid for Jamie Cluesman's squad.
UVA Wise (2-3) led 22-17 at intermission before busting the game open with a 30-point third quarter. Burger scored eight points in the stanza as the Cavs made 12-of-20 field goals over the 10-minute stretch. Freshman Makenzie Bremer came up big, scoring six of her season-high 12 points during the stretch. Her 3-pointer with 2:01 to play in the quarter gave the visitors a 52-29 lead, the largest of the game to that point.
King (1-6) committed 12 turnovers during the pivotal third period on a night when the Tornado gave it away 25 times.
In the fourth quarter, King would get no closer than 14 when Torey Walker had an offensive rebound put back at the 4:54 mark. UVA Wise closed the game on an 11-to-4 run to claim the 21-point triumph.
The Cavs built the halftime lead behind a strong defensive effort, the Tornado made just 7-of-35 field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
UVA Wise won the battle of the boards for a fifth straight game to start the year by claiming a 47-to-37 advantage on the glass.
Fifth-year Caitlyn Ross joined Burger and Bremer in double-figure scoring. Ross netted 11 points while adding five assists and four steals to her stat line.
Alayna Smith led King with 13 points while Ashley Allen posted 10 rebounds in the loss.
UVA Wise collected 23 fast break points in the win and scored 42 of its 73 total points in the paint.
Next up for Cluesman's squad is a trip to Limestone for the team's conference road opener. Tip-off from Gaffney, S.C. is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
