GAFFNEY, S.C. - - Kalisha Hill netted a team-high 20 points while Limestone limited UVA Wise to 31.5 percent shooting en route to a 64-57 South Atlantic Conference victory inside the Timken Center Saturday.
Hill's jumper with just over a minute to play in the third quarter gave Limestone (5-1, 1-0 SAC) a 40-38 advantage. It would be lead the Saints would not relinquish as her bucket was the start of a 17-to-7 scoring spurt that saw UVA Wise (2-4, 0-2 SAC) fall behind 55-45 with just over four minutes to play.
The Cavs would get to as close as six when Katlin Burger scored two of her game-high 20 points with 3:16 to play. The Saints quickly countered with a bucket from Hill and after Burger split a pair of foul shots, the hosts delivered the knockout blow on a 3-pointer from Reagan Kargo. Kargo's triple left the score 60-50 with 2:02 remaining
Jamie Cluesman's team would be unable to get any closer than two possessions down the stretch as Limestone improved to 3-2 all-time against UVA Wise.
Whistles were plentiful in the contest as the two schools were assessed a combined 45 fouls which led to 56 free throw attempts.
The start-and-stop in the action led to sloppy play at times as well with UVA Wise turning it over 22 times and Limestone coughing it up 19 times.
The Cavs left points at the free-throw line; UVA Wise connected on just 22-of-36 attempts, including a 4-for-10 effort in the second quarter.
The six free throw misses in the second quarter proved to be costly as the visitors missed a chance to build a healthy halftime lead. UVA Wise led by as many as nine in the period when Makenzie Bremer scored off a Burger pass. From there, the Cavs would make just one of their next four free throws as the Saints battled back to a halftime tie.
Freshman Jalie Ruehling had the best rebounding performance of her young career. The 5-foot-5 guard corralled 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive as her team won the battle of the boards 46-to-35. It marked the sixth consecutive game to start the season that UVA Wise has out rebounded its opponent.
Burger finished 9-of-18 from the floor while Caitlyn Ross tallied 14 points thanks to a 10-for-12 showing at the line to be the only UVA Wise in double-figure scoring.
Hill finished with a game-best 15 rebounds to record a double-double while Kargo (13) and Shariah Gaddy (12) joined the forward in double-figure scoring for the victors.
The Cavs finished the game 17-for-54 from the floor and just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. The 17 makes are the fewest for the team this season while the one made triple marks the second time this season the team has made fewer than two long range shots.
Cluesman's crew will return to action Monday against Concord in a non-conference contest. Tip-off from the Prior Center is slated for 5:30 p.m.
