MORROW, Ga. - - Flagler limited UVA Wise to 27.3 percent shooting en route to a 68-56 NCAA Division II women's basketball victory Saturday. With the result, the two teams each go 1-1 in the South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference Challenge as the Cavaliers defeated Clayton State in overtime Friday while the Saints fell to Anderson.
Flagler's (1-1) Destin McClendon fired in a game-high 17 points to lead a trio of Saints in double-figure scoring. The Peach Belt representative led wire-to-wire and by as many as 24 points in the win before UVA Wise (1-1) started battling back.
Following a McClendon foul shot, Flagler led 59-35 with 6:25 to play. From there, UVA Wise closed the game on a 21-to-9 scoring spurt to fall by 12.
Freshman Sarah Burton led the Cavs with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Next up, UVA Wise will take on UT-Chattanooga in an exhibition game next Saturday at 3 p.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
