CAVS RUN BY FLYING FLEET FOR FIRST LEAGUE WIN

WISE - - UVA Wise rushed for a season-high 263 yards and scored four touchdowns on the ground en route to a 34-23 South Atlantic Conference victory over Erskine College inside Carl Smith Stadium.

Erskine (0-8, 0-6 SAC) jumped out on top early behind a 44-yard touchdown pass from Craig Pender to Se'Maj Johnson at the 13:20 mark of the opening period. The Flying Fleet pushed the lead to 14-0 when Ausin Damron hauled in a 10-yard touchdown reception from Pender with 3:57 to play in the quarter.

UVA Wise (2-6, 1-5 SAC) got on the board with three seconds left in the first quarter when Jaevon Gillespie capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.

The score would remain unchanged for the remainder of the half before a decisive third quarter belonged solely to the Cavaliers.

UVA Wise received the opening kick and moved the ball 63 yards on nine plays culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jake Corken. Following Jake Marcantel's conversion kick, the game was tied at 14.

The Fleet would go back in front when Dylan Beauford booted a 47-yard field goal with 6:30 to play in the quarter, it would be Erskine's last lead of the game.

Corkren put his team back on top for good with his second 1-yard touchdown scamper before Jordon Whitley capped a 20-point third quarter for UVA Wise with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

In front 27-17 moving to the fourth quarter, Zavier Lomax effectively put the game out of reach with a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:57 to play. Lomax's run capped a 12-play, 76-yard drive that consumed 5:14 of game play.

The Flying Fleet scored one final time with 6:15 to play on a Darius Hazel 11-yard touchdown run but, the Cavs were able to run out the clock securing their first league win of the season.

Lomax finished with 74 yards on 15 carries while Gillespie added 70 yards on 14 carries. Aydan Willis added a team-high 10 stops while Dacorian Jones-Montgomery registered nine tackles for the Cavs' defense.

Corey Johnston led all players with 12 tackles while Hazel posted a game-best 76 yards rushing in defeat.

Next week, UVA Wise travels to Mars Hill in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
