BANNER ELK, N.C. - The UVA Wise volleyball team swept the Lees-McRae Bobcats in three sets for their ninth win of the season Tuesday night. The Cavaliers were in control the whole way, downing the non-conference opponent 25-20, 25-15, 25-17.
Still missing sophomore outside hitter Bailey Conner and senior middle hitter Cassidy Farley to injury, the Cavs snapped a three-match losing streak thanks to some big performances from a flurry of different players.Â
Junior outside hitter Kaylee Scarce once again led the Cavaliers in scoring, striking 11 kills in the win. This marks the 15th time this season that Scarce finished a match as the leading scorer for the Cavaliers.
She also led the team in digs with 14, marking her 12th double-double this season.Â
Freshman right side Serina Petersen had a career night defensively. Petersen had just set an early career-high of nine kills in the Cavs' most recent match against Lenoir-Rhyne. She followed that up with a career-high five blocks against Lees-McRae.Â
Petersen also produced offensively for UVA Wise, as she was perfect in four attack attempts with four kills.Â
Fellow freshman outside hitter Riley Brandon had a good night hitting .211 on six kills, the third most of any Cavalier hitters. Three of her six kills came in the opening set win.Â
Junior outside hitter Morgan Blevins tied a season-high with 10 kills, as she did on only 19 attacks for a .474 hitting percentage.Â
The UVA Wise defense at the net was stellar in all three sets as the Cavs totaled eight blocks on the night. Four different Cavaliers recorded three or more blocks including Brandon, Blevins, Petersen and junior outside hitter Dannah Persinger who stuffed Lees-McRae three times.Â
Persinger has quietly been one of the best defenders on a Cavalier team that has led the SAC in blocks per set all season long. She ranks sixth in the conference in total blocks with 55 total blocks, while also ranking sixth at 0.83 blocks per set.Â
The Cavaliers will return to SAC play on Tuesday, Oct. 24 as they remain on the road to face Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn. at 6 p.m.
