WISE - - Senior Caitlyn Ross established a new program assist record while Nia Vanzant became the 13th woman in school history to eclipse 1,300 career points as UVA Wise scored a 73-68 South Atlantic Conference victory inside the Prior Center Monday.
UVA Wise (10-5, 2-3 SAC) trailed by as many as nine points in the opening quarter before taking its first lead of the game with a 15-to-6 scoring spurt in the third quarter.
Cluesman's team took its first lead at the 1:45 mark of the third period on a Katlin Burger layup. The bucket was just part of another big day for the sophomore who netted a game-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting. It was the second consecutive game the forward scored over 25 points.
Limestone (7-8, 2-3 SAC) quickly regained the lead as Shariah Gaddy took a Quin Byrd pass and laid the ball in the bucket to make it a 52-50 contest with under a minute to play in the third period.
The lead would eventually swap hands five times, the last coming when Ross fired a bullet pass to Vanzant who scored a fast break bucket to put the Cavs on top 57-56 with 8:13 remaining. The Ross assist was the 530th of her career, allowing her to tie Amber Carter for the school's all-time program lead.
Moments later, the senior point guard would break the record when she assisted on a Josie Hester bucket with 3:53 to play. Hester's shot made it a 63-60 UVA Wise lead and started a 12-to-6 run that put the game out of reach.
Limestone netted 20 fast break points in the opening half before being held to four fast break points in the final 20 minutes. Byrd scored all 16 of her points in the opening half while Reagan Kargo chipped in 15 in the loss.
The Saints' Destiny Jackson was the game's top rebounder with 13 rebounds. Limestone grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and made eight long-range shots but the visitors shot just four foul shots in the game as the hosts were whistled for only five fouls in the game.
Vanzant made 9-of-12 field goal attempts en route to 19 points while grabbing eight rebounds while Ross finished with 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds to aid Burger's big offensive output.
UVA Wise played only six players in the win with Burger, Ross, Vanzant and Hester logging all 40 minutes.
As a team, the Cavs shot 54.5 percent from the floor and blocked 10 shots. Kaitlin Bailey led the defensive charge with six blocks as Limestone was held to 12-of-46 shooting in the second half.
