MARS HILL, N.C. - - Katlin Burger's 23 points and 11 rebounds led a trio of UVA Wise players in double figures as Jamie Cluesman's team scored its third consecutive victory with a 75-55 win over Mars Hill inside Chambers Gymnasium's Burt Standford Arena at David Riggins Court Wednesday.
UVA Wise (11-5, 3-3 SAC) entered the fourth quarter with a 53-47 lead before erupting with a 17-0 scoring run to put the game out of reach.
Mars Hill (3-10, 0-6 SAC) would be held to 2-of-14 shooting over the final 10 minutes as the guests scored their seventh straight victory over the Lions since joining the South Atlantic Conference.
Burger scored six of her game-high 23 points in the decisive fourth quarter while also grabbing six rebounds in the period. The sophomore finished the game 8-of-16 from the floor as she scored over 20 points for the third straight game.
Fellow sophomore Josie Hester was also key in the fourth quarter as she made two of her 3-pointers in the quarter as part of a 13-point outing.
Redshirt junior Nia Vanzant was the third Cavalier in double-figure scoring as she chipped in 15 points. The 15 points give Vanzant 1,329 for her career; the point tally moves her past former UVA Wise standout Makenzie Cluesman for 12th in program history.
Senior point guard Caitlyn Ross had one of her better games of the season running the offense. Ross finished 3-of-5 from the floor en route to seven points while handing out 12 assists against just two turnovers while playing all 40 minutes.
Maddie Gillie led the Lions with 15 points but the hosts struggled on the glass. In addition to Burger's 11 rebounds, senior Leah Kestner tied a season-high with 10 rebounds as UVA Wise won the battle of the glass 46-to-34.
Cluesman's crew will put their three-game winning streak on the line Saturday when the team plays host to Catawba at 2 p.m. inside the Prior Center.
