GAFFNEY, S.C. - - Quin Byrd's 13 points and 13 assists powered Limestone to an 85-68 win over UVA Wise inside the Timken Center Saturday. The victory allowed the Saints to move a game ahead of the Cavaliers in the South Atlantic Conference standings while avenging a loss to UVA Wise in Wise earlier this month.
Limestone (10-9, 5-4 SAC) closed the first quarter on a 26-to-12 scoring run to take a 26-17 lead to the second quarter. It would be a lead Corey Fox's team would not relinquish.
UVA Wise (13-7, 4-5 SAC) was able to stay within arm's reach thanks to the play of sophomore guard Josie Hester's shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Huntersville, N.C. product sank a trio of 3-pointers in the first half en route to 13 first-half points as the visitors entered the locker room trailing 48-35.
Hester would finish tied with her teammate Katlin Burger with a game-high 18 points as Hester tied her career-high with four made shots from distance.
However, the offensive rebounding and shooting prowess of the Saints proved to be too much to overcome.
Limestone finished the contest with 15 offensive rebounds and nine made 3-pointers. Overall, the hosts shot 44.3 percent from the floor while making 14-of-16 free throws.
Reagan McCray and Reagan Kargbo scored 17 points each with Kalisha Hill tacking on 12 to join Byrd in double-figure scoring for the winners.
Limestone controlled the glass by outrebounding UVA Wise 45-to-27; the Cavaliers were limited to just two offensive rebounds.
Nia Vanzant eclipsed 1,400 career points in defeat. The redshirt junior finished with 16 points to move within 14 points of former Cavalier Taylor Sandidge's NCAA Division II era program record of 1,420 points for a career.
Burger made seven field goals en route to her 18 points, it marked the sixth time in the last seven games the forward has scored at least 10 points.
UVA Wise will be off until Wednesday when the team plays host to SAC Mountain Division leader Carson-Newman. Tip-off from the Prior Center is slated for 5:30 p.m.
