WISE — Behind a historic 36-point, ten three-pointer night from Southwest Virginia product Luke Lawson, UVA Wise charged through a 106-83 win over Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
The win marks the largest victory for the Cavaliers over a SAC opponent since their induction to the conference in 2020.
The Emory & Henry Wasps (10-7, 2-6 SAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two possessions but Rron Ukaj led the Cavalier breakthrough with two back-to-back layups.
At the 11:35 mark, a three-point dagger from Ben Bryson gave UVA Wise (10-7, 3-5 SAC) their first lead of the night. A jumper from Gabe Brown of the Wasps pushed their lead back at 18-17, but Lawson chucked up his first three-pointer of the night and him — and the Cavs — never turned back. At the end of the half, the Cavaliers held a four point lead.
The Cavalier lead bled into the second half as Bradley Dean forced a Wasps turnover and converted the run into a layup to get ahead by six.
The Wasps' heavy hitter came from Clintwood, Va.-native Gabe Brown who responded with a night of ten field-goals and five rebounds.
The Cavaliers chugged along as Lawson went 10-for-13 from three-point range, marking an individual single-game program record.
With only two minutes left in the game, Lawson made his tenth three-pointer and solidified a 20 point lead.
Emory & Henry went the last two minutes without a bucket and Calen Lightford had the last three-point laugh to swat the Wasps out of the Prior Center.
In addition to Lawson's breakthrough night, Bradley Dean added 28 points with five rebounds, eight assists, and four steals.
Emory & Henry's Brown and Leftwich had help from Patrick Antonelli and Christian Drummer who tallied 11 points each.
The Cavaliers held the Wasps to only 27.3-percent from the arc, while the Cavalier squad shot a 73.7-percent.
Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Limestone to face the Saints on Saturday, Jan. 21 for a 4 PM tip.
