CATAWBA FENDS OFF HIGHLAND CAVALIERS

WISE — Catawba found its strength in six double-digit scorers and in total rebounds against UVA Wise on the evening, ultimately paving their way to a 95-81 conference victory on Saturday, January 14.

Despite a back and forth effort from both squads in the first 12 minutes, a hefty run led by Javeon Jones put Catawba (11-4, 6-1 SAC) ahead by 11 at the 5:15 mark. Kervens Yacinthe sank a three-point shot in response, but Catawba maintained a nine point lead going into the break.

In the first half, Ben Bryson was hot from the arc — hitting a solid four three-pointers to pace the Cavaliers (9-7, 2-5 SAC). Trailing close behind, Patrick Shelley added 10 points from four field goals and a pair of free throws.

Catawba found their groove and stuck with it in the second half, holding the Cavs to an 0-16 showing from three-point range. Catawba found their largest lead at 21 at the 15:55 mark after Jones found his way to a two-point bucket. As the final buzzer sounded, Catawba solidified the 14-point victory.

Catawba outrebounded the Cavaliers 48-25 on the night.

Bradley Dean led the Cavaliers with 20 points while Shelley snagged a career-high of 16.

Jones led Catawba with 24 while Kaleb Wallace hung close behind with 16.

Up next, the Cavaliers face Southwest Virginia foes Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
