CARTER PICKS A PAIR BUT CAVS FALL TO SAINTS

GAFFNEY, S.C. - - Tre Stewart rushed for a single-game school record 320 yards and three touchdowns to lead Limestone to a 27-13 South Atlantic Conference victory at Saints Field Saturday evening. It was the first ever football game played on campus by Limestone as 2,854 fans turned out for the contest.

It was the third consecutive loss for UVA Wise (1-3, 0-2 SAC) who initially jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Jaevon Gillespie galloped in from three yards out to cap a 7-play, 32-yard scoring drive.

The lead would be the only lead the Cavaliers would know on the night. Limestone (3-1, 2-0 SAC) would score a pair of second quarter touchdowns to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Stewart put the finishing touches on an 11-play, 95-yard scoring drive with a 20-yard touchdown plunge before Aeneas Dean's 39-yard pick six helped send the Saints into the intermission leading 13-7.

Stewart's second scoring run, a 56-yarder would come at the 14:20 mark of the third quarter to extend the Limestone lead to 20-7.

Robert Carter would give UVA Wise hope when the defensive back picked off his second pass of the game and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The conversion attempt failed, leaving it a seven point game at 20-13 with eight minutes to play in the third quarter.

The game's final score came with 9:42 remaining with Stewart busted an 82-yard touchdown run to seal the 27-13 triumph.

Limestone outgained UVA Wise 475-to-338; as has been the case all season, the third quarter proved costly for Dane Damron's team. The Cavs mustered just 21 yards on 14 plays in the 15-minute session.

Gillespie finished with 111 rushing yards in the loss while Carter tallied 139 all-purpose yards behind his interception return and kick returns. Carter added four solo stops and a pass break up in addition to his two interceptions.

Neither team had success throwing the ball, UVA Wise's Lendon Redwine was 20-for-38 passing for 166 yards and a pair of interceptions while a pair of Limestone signal callers combined to go 14-for-28 for 113 yards and two interceptions.

Trevor Morris led the Cavs' defense with eight tackles while Chandler Matthews led all players with 11 tackles for the Saints.

UVA Wise will look to get back on track next week when nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne visits Smith Stadium for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
