WISE - - The University of Virginia's College at Wise's athletic department announces the selection of April Damron '04 as part of the 2022 Hall of Fame Class.
Â
A native of Jenkins, Ky., Damron was the first in a long lineage of great Highland Cavalier pitchers. The right-hander led a pitching staff that guided UVA Wise to four consecutive regional tournament appearances and a pair of conference championships over her four seasons inside the circle.
Â
A three-time all-conference and two-time all-region selection, Damron was named UVA Wise Female Athlete of the Year following her senior season after guiding the Cavs to the 2004 Appalachian Athletic Conference crown.
Â
When Damron's career ended, she held career school records for earned run average (2.27), lowest opponent batting average (.164), wins (53), appearances (65), starts (56), complete games (49), shutouts (6), and innings pitched (516 1/3).
Â
Her 2003 season is one of the single best pitching seasons in school history. Damron tossed 115 1/3 innings while holding opponents to a single-season school record .104 batting average. That spring, Damron won 13 games while going the distance in 14-of-20 games she started.
Â
For her career, Damron registered a 53-25 record with a 2.27 ERA and 367 strikeouts.
Â
She graduated from UVA Wise with a degree in psychology before going on to become one of the more successful high school coaches in Kentucky history. At the helm of Jenkins High School, Damron recorded 285 victories over 12 seasons to rank top 25 in state history.
Â
Today, Damron serves as an assistant softball coach and university drug counselor at the University of Pikeville.
