GAFFNEY, S.C. - - No. 23 Limestone withstood a valiant effort from a short-handed UVA Wise squad as the Saints posted a 15-11 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon.
EARLY START PROVES KEY
Limestone (10-3, 6-1 SAC) scored four of the game's first five goals in what proved to be a pivotal stretch. The Saints had four different players score in the stretch including Elizabeth Muscella who finished with a game-high six goals.
CAVS GET EVEN
UVA Wise (4-8, 1-5 SAC) would tie the game when Meghan Dennehy's club rattled off three consecutive goals in the second quarter. Katie Allen, Ellie Earnshaw and Mallory Trimble all scored during the stretch to knot the game at 6-6.
LIMESTONE REGAINS THREE-GOAL SPREAD
Sarah Dudick would score a pair of goals as part of a 4-to-1 spurt for the Saints that saw the hosts take a 10-7 lead with 7:24 to play in the third period.
UVA WISE ANSWERS
Again, the visitors responded to tie the contest. Abby Stoffelen scored a woman-down goal to get her club within two before Allen and Caroline Earnshaw each scored to tie the game with 12:18 to play.
SAINTS CLOSE IT OUT
The depth of Limestone would close out the win as the nationally-ranked squad would score five of the game's final six goals to score the 15-11 triumph.
BOX SCORE NOTES
Trimble finished with three groundballs and three caused turnovers while Allen and Ellie Earnshaw had three goals each.
