WISE - - Fifth-year senior Erin Smith tied a single-game program record with seven caused turnovers to give her 105 for her career to tie the career program record as UVA Wise (5-8, 2-5 SAC) took down Newberry (10-4, 4-3 SAC) 12-10 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday.
STARTING STRONG
The Cavaliers scored four of the game's first five goals to lead 4-1 with 11:47 to play in the opening half. Four different UVA Wise players scored during the stretch as Abby Stoffelen, Mallory Trimble, Caroline Earnshaw, and Grace Golatt found the back of the net for Meghan Dennehy's squad.
THREE STRAIGHT FROM THE WOLVES
Newberry would net the game's next three goals to tie the game with 7:46 to play in the second quarter. Chloe Wood would score unassisted before Cassell Richardson scored twice to tie the score.
CLOSING FIRST HALF WITH FLURRY
Stoffelen gave her team the lead back with an unassisted goal at the seven-minute mark of the first half before Anna Claire Watt found Caroline Earnshaw 46 seconds later to push the UVA Wise advantage to 6-4. Stoffelen would score an unassisted goal with 2:40 to play in the opening half before Golatt found Caroline Earnshaw for a woman-up goal in the quarter's final seconds to send the Cavs to the locker-room leading 8-4.
NEWBERRY ANSWERS
Out of the halftime break, the Wolves scored the opening three goals of the third quarter. Wood, Marissa Plumer, and Adriana Hart all scored unassisted goals to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 2:57 to play in the period.
UVA Wise would go to the final 15 minutes leading by a pair with Ellie Earnshaw scoring a woman-up goal with 1:48 to play in the third quarter.
CLOSING IT OUT
Watt would score back-to-back goals to push the Cavs spread to 11-9 before Trimble's goal at the 4:03 mark essentially sealed the deal. Heather Johnston would score the game's final goal for the Wolves, providing the final margin of 12-10.
BOX SCORE NOTES
Five yellow cards were issued in the game as well as a green card. Stoffelen and Caroline Earnshaw had three goals each to lead the Cavs while Plumer netted a game-high four goals in defeat.
Ashley Shannon snagged a team-high five draw controls in the win while UVA Wise finished 4-for-7 in free position chances.
