Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Darrell-Dingus Ely

CAVS HOLD OFF LIONS

MARS HILL, N.C. - - Senior Katie Allen scored a game-high five goals while freshmen Grace Golatt, Anna Claire Watt and Abby Stoffelen all netted three goals in UVA Wise's 18-14 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Mars Hill Tuesday.

FIRST QUARTER PROPELS CAVS

UVA Wise (4-7, 1-4 SAC) jumped out to an 8-3 lead after 15 minutes of play and never looked back. After Mars Hill's (6-6, 2-5 SAC) Kiersten Foust opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 18 seconds into the game, the guests scored the next four goals to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The four-goal scoring run was fueled by Allen and Stoffelen as each woman scored a pair of goals in the stretch.

Allen would add two more goals in the opening period while Ashley Shannon and Golatt would contribute a goal each to stake Meghan Dennehy's squad to the early advantage.

SECOND QUARTER RUN

The second period started out similarly to the opening stanza. The Lions scored the first goal of the period when Haley Stallings scored less than 30 seconds into the quarter before another Cavalier run ensued.

Stoffelen would net a goal in between two goals from Mallory Trimble to put UVA Wise in front 11-4.

MARS HILL TIGHTENS THE SCORE

The hosts would score three of the half's final five goals as Sydney Joyce scored twice and Foust scored once to get their team within six at 14-8 following the first half of play.

ANNA CLAIRE WATT SPARKS THIRD QUARTER RUN

Watt scored three of her team's four goals as part of a 4-0 scoring spurt to start the second half. When the freshman scored at the 7:23 mark of the period, it put the Cavs in front 18-8.

LIONS RALLY

Watt's goal would be the last of the day for UVA Wise as Mars Hill scored the final six goals of the contest. Alex Tazzetta scored twice with Hastings, Foust and Samantha Newton scoring once each.

BOX SCORE NOTES

Golatt added two assists and a team-high seven draw controls to her stat line. As a team, UVA Wise was 24-for-25 in clear opportunities and put more shots on goal (39-33) than Mars Hill.
