WISE - - No. 25 Wingate scored 10 second quarter goals en route to a 20-11 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory over UVA Wise at Carl Smith Stadium Friday. Paige Kramer (6) and Leah Knowles (5) combined to score 11 goals for the victorious Bulldogs while freshman Grace Golatt netted a season-best five goals for the Cavaliers.
UVA WISE STARTS FAST
Behind the play of Golatt, UVA Wise got off to a good start against the nationally ranked foe. The freshman scored a trio of goals in the opening 15 minutes to aid the Cavs to a 6-3 lead after a quarter of play.
WINGATE TAKES CONTROL
The Bulldogs scored 10-of-11 second period goals to command of the contest. In the period, Knowles netted three goals to aid the guests to the large margin.
SECOND HALF DEFENSE
Defense was the name of the game in the second half as Wingate outscored UVA Wise 7-4 in the final 30 minutes to claim the 20-11 win. The Cavs received goals from Golatt, Mallory Trimble, Lauren Cole and Katie Allen in the second half.
BOX SCORE NOTES
UVA Wise senior Erin Smith scooped a game-high six groundballs to surpass 150 for her career. By doing so, Smith became the third player in program history to reach the mark. The defender added a game-best five caused turnovers to her stat sheet.
Wingate forced UVA Wise into a season-high 33 turnovers and won the draw control battle 22-to-13. Knowles led all players with 12 draw controls.
