CAVS TAKE DOWN ANOTHER NATIONALLY-RANKED FOE, SPLIT WITH EAGLES

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. — For the third time this season, The UVA Wise Cavaliers defeated a nationally-ranked team as they split with No. 18 Carson-Newman and handed the Eagles their second conference loss in the Tuesday doubleheader in Jefferson City, Tenn.

GAME BY GAME ACTION:

The Carson-Newman Eagles (25-5, 6-2 SAC) found a way to score early in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 after a sacrifice fly RBI from Emily Harris.

The lead would be short-lived, as the UVA Wise Cavaliers (14-8, 6-6 SAC) scored a run in the top of the second with a Madison Milne sacrifice fly to bring in Alexis Miles. The next inning went scoreless on both sides, as McKenna Falwell locked SieAnna Cameron up and forced a groundout and a popup.

In the bottom of the third, the Eagles brought some force as a back-to-back single and a triple put their squad up 2-1. Carson-Newman and UVA Wise then deadlocked each other for an inning until a rally from Cavalier bats and an error from Eagle Leah Sohm gave UVA Wise a 3-2 lead that lasted until the top of the seventh.

Kaylee Jones, who hadn't hit a home run since March 4 at Bluefield State, would smash a game-changing, scoreboard-hitting dinger to score two more for the Cavs and give the team a 5-2 edge that the Eagles wouldn't recover from. The senior led the day in RBIs with two.

Although Carson-Newman outhit the Cavaliers seven hits to six, the Cavaliers with McKenna Falwell in the circle would leave eleven Eagles on base throughout the contest.

With Falwell's four strikeouts in Game 1, she marked herself as the fifth pitcher in UVA Wise program history to reach 250 career strikeouts.

With the win, Falwell now sits at an 8-3 record on the year.

In the nightcap, the Eagles came back with a vengeance as they struck first in the bottom of the first with an RBI from Sohm to get an early lead. The lead would soon grow as the Eagles flocked together and put up a whopping ten hits in the bottom of the second led by a leadoff Macey Hughes triple to put their lead at 11-0.

The momentum stayed afoot for Carson-Newman, as they scored yet another seven runs in the third and solicited another two in the fourth.

Kara Long had the only hit for the Cavaliers in Game 2 in the first inning as she singled up the middle.

The Cavaliers wouldn't be able to score for the contest as the Eagles took Game 2 revenge by a score of 18-0 with 20 hits and no errors.

Syerra Rogers in the circle for the Eagles snagged a shutout and put her record to 8-1 on the season.
