WISE, VA — The UVA Wise Cavaliers (13-7, 5-5 SAC) secured their first conference sweep against the Coker Cobras (11-17, 1-5 SAC) today, March 19 by scores of 8-0 and 3-2.
GAME ONE SHUTDOWN
In Game 1, Sarah Barrett put her force into a ball in the first inning, shooting the ball over the centerfield fence to put two up on the scoreboard.
The Cavalier bats kept on making contact and kept zeroing the Cobras out, as McKenna Falwell added another run to the board after a solo shot to left in the bottom of the second inning.
With an early 3-0 lead, Falwell in the circle and the Cavalier defense held Coker to only three hits in the entire contest — Chloe Pelham with a pair and Ariana Fair with one.
Alexis Miles added to the hitting frenzy with a two-run homer to right field in the third inning, while McKnight added a homer of her own immediately following Miles' shot.
Securing a 6-0 lead, the Cavaliers were too strong for Cobra pitcher Jordyn Goodman who allowed six Cavalier hits (four of which were home runs).
A McKnight single up the middle in the fourth inning sealed the deal, scoring two to solidify an 8-0 lead. After silencing the Cobras in the top of the fifth, the Cavaliers walked away with the win.
CAVS HANG ON IN GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, the Cobras struck first with an RBI single up the middle from Caitlyn Wray to get ahead 1-0. The Cobras would hold that lead until the bottom of the second, when a Cobra error would allow Michaela Barney and Mady Buchanan to reach home plate, taking a 2-1 lead.
Kara Long was able to add another homerun to her statbook when she plastered one in right field to get a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Cobras tried to cut it close when Chloe Pelham was caught stealing at second but allowed Ava Jay to score. With Coker only down by a run, the Cavaliers needed to hold the Cobras off for an inning and a half.
Although the Cobras popped seven hits, the combined effort of Falwell and the save from Sydney Collins held Coker off of the plate through the final out.
With the sweep, the Cavaliers improve their conference record to 5-5.
