UVA WISE SLIPS BY NATIONALLY RANKED LANDER

WISE - - No. 18 Lander (USA Lacrosse Magazine) had a game-tying goal disallowed with 22 seconds to play as UVA Wise claimed its first ever win over a ranked opponent 10-9 at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. Sydney Trask and Katie Allen scored four goals each for the Cavaliers who improved to 2-0 for the second time in three seasons.

A GOOD FOOT FORWARD

Meghan Dennehy's team raced out to a four goal lead after the opening period as Allen netted three goals and Trask one in the opening session to take the hosts to a 5-1 lead. The Cavaliers would lead 7-1 with 2:17 to play in the opening half when Abby Stoffelen found the back of the net before the Bearcats began coming back.

LANDER COMEBACK

The visitors would score the final three goals of the first half to cut the deficit to three entering intermission. The Bearcats would outscore the Cavs 3-to-2 in the third period to head to the fourth stanza trailing 9-7.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

Melissa Clapsaddle and Emma Pearson would each score within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the contest at nine. Allen would score what would prove to be the decisive goal with 11:07 to play when she scored unassisted for the 10-9 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

In net, goalie Jordan Edwards tallied eight saves and defender Erin Smith recorded a trio of caused turnovers and five groundballs to lead the UVA Wise defense.

Lander was led by Clapsaddle who posted four goals and Pearson who netted three goals in the loss. With the defeat, the Bearcats are now 4-1.
