SLOW START PROVES COSTLY, UVA WISE FALLS AT CN

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - Carson-Newman began Saturday's South Atlantic Conference women's basketball game with UVA Wise on an 11-0 run and the host Eagles never looked back en route to a wire-to-wire 75-54 win at Holt Fieldhouse.

Carson-Newman (5-5, 1-2 SAC) forced 21 UVA Wise (6-3, 1-2 SAC) turnovers which led to 30 points for the Eagles who improved to 7-0 all-time against the Cavaliers.

Junior guard Braelyn Wykle led the offensive effort for CN as she tossed in a season-high 27 points while Tori Rutherford came off the bench to net 12 points for Mike Mincey's squad.

The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 18 points in the second quarter but, the visitors had trimmed the lead to seven when Josie Hester scored seven consecutive points.

The 7-0 scoring spurt by Hester was part of another big day for the guard. The Huntersville, N.C. product scored a team-high 18 points and tied her season-high with four made 3-pointers.

The momentum was short-lived for the Cavaliers, the Eagles countered with a run of their own and by the time the third quarter horn sounded the hosts held a 58-45 advantage.

CN would hold a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter before claiming the 21-point triumph.

The Eagles enjoyed a decisive advantage at the charity stripe, making 15-of-19 attempts while the Cavs were 8-of-10 at the line. CN also won the rebounding battle 46-to-37.

Caitlyn Ross finished two assists shy of a double-double in the loss. The guard grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds and handed out eight assists. She now has 495 assists for her career, leaving her five assists shy of becoming the third player in program history to reach 500.

Leah Kestner also enjoyed a big day on the inside for the Cavs. The senior grabbed a season-high nine rebounds while notching a career-high four blocks in a season-high 35 minutes.

Next up, UVA Wise will visit Puerto Rico for a pair of games on the island. The action begins Wednesday when the team faces the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon at 2 p.m. before playing Universidad del Sagrado Corazon Thursday at 2 p.m.
