WISE, VA — The UVA Wise Cavaliers jumped on the Eagles quick in the first set, but couldn't keep their momentum going as the Eagles finished the 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-18) win in the Prior Center on Friday, Nov. 4.
The Cavaliers (6-18, 2-16 SAC) punched in a 3-0 lead right out of the gate with two perfectly-placed kills from Lily Gutierrez. Kills from Blake Cherry and Julia Wheeler of the Eagles (25-4, 16-2 SAC) kept their squad within reach, but another run led by Cavalier Kaylee Scarce put the Cavs up three and forced a Carson-Newman timeout.
After the break, the Eagles picked up the pace with three rallies that eventually put them up by six points. Two Carson-Newman errors and a kill from Morgan Blevins gave the Cavs another spark, but the Eagles squeezed out the 25-21 win.
In the second set, the Cavs once again came out with a lead with the help of Cassidy Farley on the attack. Back-to-back scoring put each squad at nine before Carson-Newman ran off with Wheeler at the helm. The Eagles snagged set two by a score of 25-14.
In the third set, each squad battled their way to 13 points each before UVA Wise managed back-to-back kills from Blevins. With scores then tied later on at 18, Carson-Newman went on a seven-point run that solidified a 25-18 final win.
Wheeler led the night with 10 kills while Farley led the Cavaliers with six of her own. Farley also added a match-high three blocks.
The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 6-18 overall record, and a 2-16 record - the best record in the program's SAC history.
