WISE - - UVA Wise flexed its muscle in a major way Wednesday as the Cavaliers scored their largest women's basketball victory ever over King with 100-64 triumph inside the Prior Center. UVA Wise shot a NCAA DIvision II era program record 60.6 percent as the win improved Jamie Cluesman's crew to 3-0, marking the program's best start to a season since 2013.
UVA Wise (3-0) took control of the game from the onset. King (0-3) committed nine turnovers and was limited to 3-of-11 shooting in the opening 10 minutes as the hosts built a 19-7 lead.
The Cavs busted the game open in the second quarter by outscoring the Tornado 28-to-12. Caitlyn Ross dished out seven of her game-high 14 assists in the 10-minute quarter as the senior tied a career-high in the category. Sophomore Katlin Bailey came off the bench and netted 10 of her 14 points in the stanza.
Trailing 47-19 at intermission, things went from bad to worse for the Tornado in the third quarter.
King cut the lead to 25 with 6:51 to play in the third period on a foul shot from Alexa Gramann before Josie Hester capped a 14-to-5 scoring run by UVA Wise to push the lead to 65-30 at the 3:32 mark of the quarter.
Several Cavs netted firsts in the final 10 minutes as Alexis Warren and Allyson Fleenor notched their first collegiate points. Warren finished the game 5-for-5 from the floor en route to 10 points while Fleenor added four points, four rebounds and two assists.
Overall, four UVA Wise players reached double figures. Nia Vanzant led the charge with a game-high 22 points, marking the second 20-point game this season for the redshirt junior. Hester recorded a new career-high with 21 points with Burger (14) and Warren (10) also reaching double digits.
Hester added five steals to her stat line to lead a 12-steal day for the home side.
Ross added nine points and seven rebounds to her 14-assist effort while Kaitlin Bailey scored eight points, grabbed nine boards, and blocked five shots.
King was limited to 33.3 percent shooting in the game while turning the ball over 19 times. Brianna Dunbar led the offensive effort with 18 points as the Tornado fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2011.
The 100 points scored by the Cavs mark the first time the program has reached the mark since scoring 101 against Mars Hill on January 6, 2021.
UVA Wise will be back in action on Saturday when the team plays its first road game at Belmont Abbey. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
