CAVS STAY PERFECT, KNOCK OFF CRUSADERS

BELMONT, N.C. - - UVA Wise closed Saturday's non-conference NCAA Division II women's basketball game on a 15-to-6 scoring spurt to knock off Belmont Abbey 77-69 inside the Wheeler Center. The win was the fourth consecutive win to start the season for Jamie Cluesman's squad, which is off to the program's best start since 2005.

Solid offense and foul shooting proved to be the difference for UVA Wise (4-0) down the stretch. The Cavaliers made 13-of-18 free throws over the final period while converting 6-of-11 field goal attempts in the final 10 minutes to put away the Crusaders (0-2).

Katlin Burger scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the period. The sophomore logged a season-high 33 minutes as she registered double-figure scoring for the third consecutive game.

Burger was one of five UVA Wise players to score 10 or more points in the triumph. Kaitlin Bailey netted a career-high 14 points while Josie Hester continued her hot shooting with a trio of made 3-pointers en route to 14 points, Nia Vanzant scored in double figures for the fourth straight game with 13 points while Caitlyn Ross added 11 points and six assists.

Abigail Crain led all players with 26 points in defeat. Crain sank all eight of her free throw attempts while making 9-of-21 field goal attempts. Teammate Catherine Hendershot chipped in 16 points as Belmont Abbey became the first team this season to shoot greater than 33 percent against UVA Wise with a 42.3 percent showing.

Saturday's game saw 12 ties and 10 lead changes. The final lead change came when Vanzant scored with 2:30 to play to jump-start the decisive 15-to-6 scoring run to end the contest.

The 4-0 start to the season marks the best start to the season of the NCAA Division II era for the Cavs. The best start in UVA Wise history came in 2005, when the team started 6-0 en route to the Appalachian Athletic Conference crown and the program's lone national tournament appearance.

Next up, Jamie Cluesman's team is back on the road to face Livingstone. Tip-off from Salisbury is slated for 5:30 p.m.
