TURNOVERS DOOM CAVS IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA BOWL DEFEAT

EMORY, Va. - - Emory & Henry forced five UVA Wise turnovers en route to a 34-14 football victory in Southwest Virginia Bowl V. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2011 and the first with both as members of the South Atlantic Conference.

UVA Wise (1-5, 0-4 SAC) started the game with a bang as Robert Carter returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.

It would be about all that would go well for the Cavaliers in the opening half. Emory and Henry (4-2, 3-1 SAC) would pick off a quartet of passes in the opening 30 minutes to take a 17-7 lead to intermission

Wasps' running back Grayson Overstreet would cap an 8-play, 67-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter to push the hosts lead to 24-7.

UVA Wise responded when Seth Howard scored the first rushing touchdown of his career, a 5-yard plunge with 6:38 to play in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-14.

Trace Butcher would boot a 20-yard field goal with 13:46 to play to push the Emory & Henry margin to 27-14.

The Wasps would put the game away when Ivan Phillips scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown to provide the final margin of 34-14.

Job Whalen led the Cavs defense with seven tackles, six of the solo variety.

Kyle Short finished 21-for-32 passing for Emory & Henry to tally 261 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Next week, UVA Wise hosts Tusculum in a 12 p.m. kickoff.
