GREENEVILLE, TENN. — UVA Wise held the Pioneers on the ropes in the first set, but lost steam going into the last two sets as the Cavs fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-20) on Saturday, Oct. 29.
UVA Wise (5-17, 1-15 SAC) battled point-by-point with Tusculum (12-11, 11-6 SAC) in the first set with a four-kill performance from Kaylee Scarce. It would be the five point run led by Pioneer Raven Chance that would seal the deal and hold the Cavs off in a 25-19 defeat.
The Cavaliers struggled to fend off Peyton Gash on the attack, as she led her team to a second-set win while holding the Cavaliers to only ten points.
In the third set, scores were knotted at nine apiece until Gash and Chance each threw down a kill and caused three Cavalier errors to get ahead 14-9. Morgan Blevins put down back-to-back kills to get within three, but another run from the powerful Tusculum duo was enough to hide late Pioneer attack errors and secure the 25-20 final win.
On the day, Scarce led her squad with eight kills while Dannah Persinger put up three blocks to highlight UVA Wise defense.
Gash led the Pioneers with 11 kills and Chance put up three blocks.
Up next, the Cavaliers head back home for the next week to finish off the regular season with a Tuesday matchup against Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m. and a Friday matchup against Carson-Newman at 6 p.m.
