The UVA Wise Cavaliers (1-15, 0-13 SAC) struggled with offensive rebounds and took a tough 69-57 loss to the Newberry Wolves (9-7, 9-5 SAC) in Eleazer Gym on Saturday, Jan. 22.
BOX SCORE BITS:
The Wolves never let the Cavaliers snag a lead at any point in the matchup as they took their largest lead at the 6:44 mark with 16 (57-41). Both teams struggled from the arc, but the Wolves snagged 18 points from Cavalier turnovers that also helped them in the W. The Wolves dominated in their own rebounds as they grabbed 24 second-chance points while the Cavaliers put up a measly 4. Positively, the Cavaliers were nearly perfect from the line, going 13-14 from the charity stripe.Â
HALF BY HALF:
In the first half, The Wolves found themselves running away with an 11-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. A foul on Kaeleb Carter got the Cavs going, and Bryson threw in a layup. The Cavs then pieced together six consecutive points with the help of a huge Grayson Honaker three-pointer to get within four of the Wolves. As time progressed, Wolves TJ Brown and QuanDaveon McCollum paved the way for the Wolves to increase their lead by eight at the half as they snagged 14 points collectively.Â
In the second half, Marcus Ford struck first for the Wolves with a daggering three-pointer. Vassell responded with a dunk that threw Newberry off of their game, but Brown came back with another three that silenced the Cavaliers quickly. The closest the Cavaliers came within the Wolves' lead was six, as a Vassell layup brought the score to 63-57. McCollum refused to let the Cavs get any closer, and aided the Wolves in a 69-57 victory.Â
CAVS LEADERS:
Makai Vassell snagged a total 17 points on the day, while Joel Pettiford followed up with his own 13. Isaiah McAmis added 11 points to the Cavalier effort.Â
WOLVES LEADERS:Â
McCollum led the Wolves with 22 points while teammates Marcus Ford and Brown followed up with their own 16 points and 13 points.Â
