COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT, CAVS FALL TO NO. 21 BULLDOGS

WISE - - Behind double-doubles from Bryanna Troutman and Haleigh Brandon, No. 21 Wingate held off UVA Wise 63-61 in South Atlantic Conference action at the Prior Center Sunday. With the win, the Bulldogs extend their winning streak to 11, the third longest in NCAA Division II.

Wingate (11-1, 9-0 SAC) seemingly had the game on ice late in the third quarter when Jaia Wilson's 3-pointer put the visitors in front 49-31.

From there, UVA Wise (3-9, 3-7 SAC) would go on a valiant comeback. The Cavaliers would close the quarter on a 7-to-1 scoring spurt to trail by 12 at 50-38 with 10 minutes to play.

Jamie Cluesman's team would open the final period on a 7-to-1 run as Jaymi Golden highlighted the stretch with one of her season-high four 3-pointers.

The lead would be trimmed to one at the 1:17 mark when Caitlyn Ross sank a jumper only to see Troutman sink a pair of foul shots to run the lead to 59-56 with 52 seconds to play.

Golden countered for UVA Wise with a bucket in the paint to cut it back to one with 33 seconds to go. Wilson would split a pair of foul shots and the Cavs would call timeout with a chance to force overtime or take the lead. UVA Wise would never get the opportunity as a turnover would give the ball back to Wingate.

Troutman would make a pair of foul shots to make it a 62-58 game with eight seconds to play before Golden banked in a WNBA range 3-pointer to make it 62-61 with six seconds remaining.

Hannah Clark would then be fouled and the Bulldog would split a pair of free throws with two seconds to play giving UVA Wise one final shot.

Without any timeouts, the Cavs would be forced to go the length of the floor and Kalee Johnson would get off a half court attempt but the shot would be off the mark allowing the Bulldogs to escape.

Troutman finished with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds while Brandon scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.  Wilson was a third Wingate player in double figures as she chipped in 11 on 3-of-7 shooting.

Golden led UVA Wise with a season-high 20 points while Nia Vanzant continued her streak of scoring in double figures in each game with 15 points.
