WISE, VA — The Newberry Wolves took down UVA Wise in the David J. Prior Convocation Center on Saturday, defeating the Cavs 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-15).
The Newberry Wolves (6-3, 1-1 SAC) came into the first match without any hiccups - scoring five unanswered points right off the bat. Kelsey Green had a kill to get the Cavs on the board, but Newberry answered with another six points making the score 11-1.Kaylee Scarce and Cassidy Farley added to the score with a kill each, but Natasha Bannister of the Wolves refused to let the Cavs take over and produced four kills in the set that helped them secure the win 25-18.
In the second set, The Wolves didn't even let the Cavs score more than nine points. Newberry's Zoe Dinkins attacked and blocked anything in her path, and aided the Wolves immensely in their 25-9 win.
Differently from the previous sets, UVA Wise battled against Newberry for the first few points and found themselves within a point of the Wolves (9-8). Although the Cavs had fight left in them, Newberry's Avery Webb and Dinkins wouldn't let anything past their front row. Their blocks kept the Wolves in the lead for the entirety of the set and secured their win 25-15.
The leader of the day was Taylor Hall of the Wolves with 12 kills. Farley of the Cavs added four kills to her stats, followed by teammates Kelsey Green and Morgan Blevins with three each. Cavalier Rylee Waye produced 10 digs for the Cavs, while Newberry's Amanda Berecz lead the effort with 18 digs. Dinkins of Newberry had a leading number of nine blocks while Green produced two.
Next, the UVA Wise volleyball team have another home match at the David J. Prior Convocation Center where they will face Concord University on Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
