VOLLEYBALL COULDN'T SURVIVE LIMESTONE, LOSE 3-0

GAFFEY, S.C. — The UVA Wise volleyball team couldn't snag a win on Tuesday's matchup against the Limestone Saints in Timken Center, dropping the match 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-18).

Limestone University (3-2, 1-0 SAC) started head-to-head with the Cavs in the first set until the fifth point was reached, and then the Saints started to pull away fast. Madysen Williams's kill was all Limestone needed to start a domino effect of Saint success — including causing the Cavs a few attack errors in the process. Although UVA Wise's Adison Minor kept the Cavs afloat with a few key kills in the set, Limestone's Leilani Wilcox Nanai, Vanessa Blas, and Josie Curran knew just where to attack and were able to secure the win 25-17.

The second set started exactly like the first set, as Limestone started to take control after each team reached five points apiece. Cavalier freshman Morgan Blevins, senior Matelyn Gibson, and sophomore Cassidy Farley were able to grab a few kills each to add to the score, but the triple threat Nanai, Blas, and Curran took control once again and held the Cavs to only 14 points in the set.

In the third set, Limestone's squad was able to grab the first four points unanswered. Sophomores Dannah Persinger and Farley were able to get the Cavs going, but were stopped by Saints Sydney Bibby and Madeline Yeager. The Saints started to run out of gas suddenly and the Cavs were able to tie the score 14-14 after kills from senior Kelsey Green. Although the Cavs seemed to rattle the Saints, they were able to bring the win home 25-18.

Blas of the Saints ended the night with 11 kills and Minor led the Cavs with eight of her own. Overall, Limestone had a total of 38 kills and the Cavs produced 24. Gibson led the Cavs with 12 digs, trailed by newcomer freshman Cana Davidson who contributed seven. On Limestone's side, Bailey Carpenter ended the night with 13 digs.

Next, the UVA Wise volleyball team will bring it back home to the David J. Prior Convocation Center, where they will face the Anderson University Trojans on Sept. 17 with a 6:00 p.m. start.
