JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - - No. 15 East Tennessee State University amassed 528 yards of total offense as the Buccaneers claimed a 45-14 win over NCAA Division II UVA Wise Saturday.
Tyler Riddell completed 13-of-18 pass attempts for ETSU (2-0) as the hosts had three receivers haul in a touchdown pass in the triumph. Will Huzzie led the receiving corps with six catches for 84 yards and a score while Jacob Salyors came out of the backfield to catch three passes for 75 yards and touchdown with Malik Murray added three receptions for 58 yards and a score.
UVA Wise (1-1) had the first scoring opportunity of the game when Dane Damron's squad took the opening kickoff and moved it 61 yards on 12 plays before eventually missing a field goal wide right.
The Cavaliers' defense would force a three-and-out on the Bucs' opening possession before UVA Wise would turn the ball over on downs on its next possession.
After UVA Wise forced a second ETSU punt, the Cavs would turn the ball over as Tyree Robinson picked off a pass and returned it to the UVA Wise 3-yard line.
The interception set up Quay Holmes who scampered in from three yards for the game's first touchdown. Tyler Keitner's conversion kick was good and ETSU led 7-0 with 6:34 to play in the opening quarter.
The score was the first of 21 consecutive points for the nationally ranked Bucs stretched the lead to 14-0 on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Riddell to Saylors and 21-0 on Holmes' second touchdown run of the game.
The Cavs got on the board with 9:03 to play in the half when Devin Heckstall hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Lendon Redwine, the two-point conversion try failed, leaving the score 21-6.
Randy Sanders' squad closed out the opening half with a 26-yard field goal by Keltner and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Riddell to Murray to go to intermission leading 38-6.
A second scoring strike from Redwine to Heckstall got UVA Wise within 24 at 38-14 with 1:13 to play in the third quarter.
It would be as close as the visitors would get as Huzzie's 14-yard touchdown reception with 9:22 to play provided the final margin of victory at 45-14.
Redwine finished the game with 232 passing yards with Heckstall finishing with 70 receiving yards on 10 catches. Defensively, Patrick Taylor finished with eight solo tackles while Robert Carter added seven solo stops for UVA Wise.
ETSU was led by Saylors who finished with 75 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards. Mike Price paced the defense with nine tackles.
